The Two Chairs is a new antiracism initiative. We want Australians to initiate and contribute to discussions of race, racism and inclusion.
Today’s battle isn’t to overcome overt racism. Today’s battle is to identify and deal with causal and subtle forms of racism.
Everyday racism consist of little acts of aggressions that aren’t overtly racist. They can come off as complimentary insults where the recipient is left wondering ‘Was that racist?’. Everyday racism alienates people by forcing them to wonder if an experience was ‘really’ racist and to constantly question that own reactions to it.
It’s racism in code. We’re working with young writers to crack that code. We’re developing fact sheets to help people detect and challenge acts of everyday racism and assumptions about racism that make it possible.
